Time: My Antagonist, My Captor, and My Thief
by Tyler Fortier

I’ve watched the minutes escape like the rush of a prison break, crawling in and out of spoon carved tunnels.
I’ve watched the sun fall like a heavy weight fighter, tangled up in an upset bout of night and day.
Now as we watch the days slowly run away with ease, along the sun soaked riverbanks and up through the tresses of the snaking concrete jungles. We must bang on time.

Bang On Time is a children’s game. It’s commonly used as a learning tool for helping kids to tell time. The game works as follows: “Read the time in words and then stop the clock when the hands are in the matching position.”
I’ve always been stuck on this idea of killing time. Not in a nothing-to-do type of way, but in a, I wish I had more time type of way. These minutes move so arbitrarily. I never feel like I exist anywhere in the present. We live in constant motion and more often than not, we’re not moving at all. The collection of songs on this record, I hold very close. They are songs that are so enmeshed in the last year of my life that I feel exposed when I hear them back. Bang On Time is stripped down, lyrically driven, and thematically rooted in ideas of love, transition, and cyclicality.

Track Name: This World Is Moving Slow
I’ve been waiting for the summer
Or at least a glimpse of sunshine
But I woke up just where I need to be
In your arms; in your sweet company

I’ve been waiting for this story
Something scripted like a movie
Every night we’d burn out like a light
And wake up like the flame of our desire

The world is moving slow
But still too fast to let her know
Still too crazy, still unknown
While I’ve been looking for a place to call my home
And she’s my home

I’ve been looking for tomorrow
Keeping one eye on my past sorrow
But when I arrive to the place I hold inside
You’re there sleeping, waiting for my love

I’ve been looking over freeways
Mile signs and city parkways
But I woke up just where I need to be
With your smile, in your sweet company

The world is moving slow
But still too fast to let her know
Still too crazy, still unknown
While I’ve been looking for a place to call my home
And she’s my home

Home is where I need to be
Seeing every thing I need to see
And I can’t get close enough
The night is where I listen to
Every noise as I'm missing you
but I can't get close enough

The world is moving slow
But still too fast to let her know
Still too crazy, still unknown
While I’ve been looking for a place to call my home
And she’s my home
Track Name: When The Day Gets Lonely
There’s moonlight on a wire tonight
And the headlights in my eyes keep passing by
Passing by
Then the morning’s waking up outside
With those old familiar flashing lights

And I love the way you love me in the morning time
I love the way you
Move like a river and flow under my skin

There’s a mystery wagon rollin’ up outside
As the stars are dancin’ in a cool blue light
And when the day gets lonely like a magazine
With torn out pages right in front of me
On the tableside

I love the way you love me in the evening time
I love the way you
Move like the ocean and sway into my arms
Track Name: Bang On Time
Time ain’t gonna catch me
I ain’t gonna sleep no more
Time ain’t gonna catch me
I ain't gonna be an old man, not ever

Time ain’t gonna catch me
I ain’t gonna worry no more
Time ain’t gonna catch me
I’m gonna be a young man, forever

Everybody’s always leaving quick
But these clocks don’t ever quit
Hold it in your mind, kill it dead
Bang on time

Time ain’t gonna catch me
I ain’t gonna leave no more
Time ain’t gonna catch me
Ain’t gonna believe no more

Time ain’t gonna catch me
I ain't gonna' die

Everybody’s always leaving quick
But these clocks don’t ever quit
Hold it in your mind, kill it dead
Bang on time
Track Name: To Keep From Growing Old
The birds are circling the shore
Throwing echo’s to the breeze
The wind is running naked down along the sea
The sun is a prophet
Saying everything must shine
The blues from the blue sky do what they can to survive

The grey from the distance is just a memory
Like the paint from that old house that’s fighting to keep the heat
So we gotta’ move
To keep from growing old, we gotta’ fight, we gotta’ fight

The trees are tangled lovers
Throwing caution to the wind
Suspended in the daylight, floating overhead
Everybody’s keeping time
by a clock kept on the wall
Spinning like a ferris-wheel, ticking round’ and round’

The noise from the distance is just a melody
Like the noise from that old man who keeps wandering the streets
So we gotta’ move
To keep from growing up, we gotta’ fight

The sleeping boy, the wedding cake
The untrimmed vines that cover everything
The careless waves that crash in from the sea
The hopeful lovers, trying to be free
Oh, we’re all trying to be free
Track Name: A Place I Used To Know
The rooftops get lonely
As the satellites grow strong
Soaking in the breeze of winds blown out to the sea
What if everything we knew, everything we wanted
We found out was wrong, we found out was wrong

The sounds of the city
Grow louder in the night
Echo through the streets to my knees up from my feet
The moon is casting shadows, casting shadows in the light pf a darkness somewhere, a darkness some fear

We got to get out of this place
A place I used to know
We got to get out of here
To anywhere, I don’t know
Maybe if we just leave, then we’ll just leave
And fill the days with longing as the bright sun comes beckoning in the street

The street signs grow fingers
As the babies roll by
Confined to the walls and to the wheels of their cages
As the women in their jackets play eye for an eye
As the world still rages, rages on and on

We got to get out of this place
A place I used to know
We got to get out of here
To anywhere, I don’t know
Maybe if we just leave, then we’ll just leave
And fill the days with longing as the bright sun comes beckoning in the street

The sounds of the city
Grow louder in my head
Like the way the I-5 interstate comes driving through your wooden gates
Keeping you awake, keeping you awake
In the grip of the night, huddled with the new moon light
Track Name: Will You Love Me?
Will you love me for my whole life?
because everyone always finds some reason to leave
Will you love me till I’m old and grey?
And after I’ve been working long days

because I want to be everything to you
And I want to be closer to you
Darln, we’ll see
Will you love me if I never leave?

Will you love me for the rest of my days?
I have been leaving but I want to stay
Will you love me when I’m not feeling quite like myself
because everyone dear, gets quiet and in need of some help

I want to be everything to you
And I want to be closer to you
Darln, we’ll see
Will you love me if I never leave?

My heart could explode so loud
Every time that it beats
And I know that I’m leaving
But I’ve never left so proud
Track Name: We Were Alive
Hey my sweet little love
Where did you go last night?
I saw you traveling across the moonlight
In a pale blue sky

I caught up with you
At the eve of our time
Sailing through the undertow
The rows and the glow
of 1 million fireflies

We were alive
We were alive

Hey my sweet little gal
I had a dream last night
Wedding bells come ringing
Little babies crying

I want to know
of all these things that will be
Time our foe
Don’t make us young, but makes us old
Old into the night

We were alive
We were alive

I’m gonna wake up
And steal the day back and hold on to my mind
Darlin just hold on to my mind
Track Name: Sweet Marie
Sweet Marie
I’m coming home to you
I’ll be leaving in the first morning light

The springtime
Has been on the run
And I’ve spent my last few days chasing down the sun

The sky was in a state of change
Always moving after days of staying same
The wind was talking with some cryptic rain
And the morning haze was still dreaming the day away
I thought I saw you standing there, Marie

Sweet Marie
I’ll be on my way
I’ll be moving in the hopeful dawn

The way we live so fast
Time blowing past
I’ve spent my whole life chasing down the one

This boy was confusing the way
When things that were leaving or were coming to stay
The birds were singing with some crazy pain
And the morning fog was still sleeping by the time I start my day
I thought I saw you there, Marie

In the heart of another
In the hands of a lover
I’ll wait for you
In the dark of the night
If the timing is right
I’ll wait for you

My mind was in a state of change
Always thinking of home after being away
The rain was talking with some city drains
And the morning sun was still waiting, too timid to start the day
I thought I saw you standing there, Marie
Track Name: All These Towns Look The Same (featuring Beth Wood)
All these towns look the same
Day by day, day by day
And by the side of the road
These things will unfold
These things we can’t explain

The sun keeps bleeding; the night’s still sleeping
These people, they’re all dreaming and I keep movin’ on
This ramblin’ heart; this travelin’ man

All these days bleed to one
Staring at the sun in the middle of the day
This bedside is cold and grey
And these pillows and sheets ain’t the ones
That you used share with me

The birds keep singing; the homeless souls still preaching
These people, they’re all working their hands down to the bone
My ramblin’ heart, I’m a travelin’ man

Tomorrow in a new town and you won’t remember my name
You won’t remember this song, no you won’t remember this song
By the morning I am gone

All these women look the same
Day by day, day by day
But I still have your picture
And your smile in a locket,
The blanket you made for me

The day keeps leaving; there ain’t no reason
Ain’t no reason why it has to be
But my ramblin heart, keeps tellin’ me to leave
Track Name: Waking Again
You say I’d break you heart and that’s fine
I knew it from the start
There was nothing left to say

You were always good that way saying what you mean
Keeping me away, away from your heart

Away from your fists at night
Clinching and grabbing tight, all of those dreams
Kickin up the sheets

Stealing all the heat, leaving it up to me
And up to my head and down to my feet

There’s a feeling that I just can’t explain
When the morning time comes rolling again
There’s a light on your cheek where the night slept
So deep and we’re waking, we’re waking again

You say goodnight my love and it’s me
Barely awake and miles away

It’s me who your thinking of while I’m on the borderline
Of something fine, something fine with you

There’s a feeling that I just can’t explain
When the morning time comes rolling again
There’s a light on your cheek where the night slept
So deep and we’re waking, we’re waking again

But I’m so far away
And I keep leaving like a sun soaked sky
At the end of the day

You were always good that way
Finding where I’d gone, bringing me back
Back where I belong
Track Name: We Waited For Everything
I had a dream within a dream
I was floating down a river with wings
Too soaked to get up and fly
Moving like a motor bike

The watershed had people lined for miles
ain't making sounds, just keeping quiet

I had a dream within a dream
I was traveling in a time machine
Spinning through cities and sounds
Over hillsides and under clouds

Electric sparrows flash and spark
In the morning light there was only dark

We stood there smiling at the end of the road
waiting for our hearts to explode
We watched the colors bleed into a tie-dye scene
we saw it from the town below
We stood there laughing at the end of the line
searching for a tune to sing
We waited for the bells to ring
We waited or everything

I had a dream within a dream
I was caught in the ocean so deep
I'd magnify the crimson sun
Shooting fire from water gun
All around me, these shadows twist
marionette dancing over the steps that were missed

We stood there smiling at the end of the road
waiting for our hearts to explode
We watched the colors bleed into a tie-dye scene
we saw it from the town below
We stood there laughing at the end of the line
searching for a tune to sing
We waited for the bells to ring
We waited or everything
